The .SE country-specific top-level domain name extension was launched in 1986 and assigned to Sweden. During the first years after its establishment, the registration process was really restrictive, so a very low number of domains were bought. Individuals were allowed to obtain only one domain under .PP.SE (“pp” stands for “private person”). Local presence was a necessity, i.e. merely Swedish individuals, businesses and organizations could obtain a dot SE domain. In 2003, however, the registration process was liberalized considerably and, as a result, the number of .SE domains has been rising each year.

Nowadays, anybody can register a dot SE domain, which gives you the opportunity to get in touch with the Swedish net community even if you do not have a local presence.
